Geneva College, The Birthplace of College Basketball

At Signs by Sam, we are extremely lucky to be exposed to projects of all kinds – from personal “Welcome Home” banners for members serving in our military to creating and installing exterior signs for major corporations.  We have had the privilege to get to know some amazing people in our area, including our recent opportunity to work in the education sector with Geneva College Athletics.

Small Town College with Big Time Influence

Tennis is one of the many women’s sports Geneva proudly offers.

Nestled in the small town of Beaver Falls, Geneva College is home to approximately 1,700 students and 80 full time faculty members. Of this figure, the Athletic Department accounts for more than 350 student-athletes and 25 full-time employees; many part-time and volunteer assistant coaches add to this number, creating a strong backbone for the college’s program. Andrew Fee, from Athletic Operations and Recruitment, has first-hand experience with the Athletics’ positive influence on both ends of the spectrum – student and employee. Attending Geneva himself, pursing a full-time opportunity with the college, which was a “no-brainer,” according to Fee.

Andrew Fee: From student to employee to coach. Many of those working at Geneva are graduates themselves and call the school home.

With many collegiate programs placing more emphasis on the logistics and success of the game, Geneva’s athletic program likes to take an all-encompassing approach. This institution acknowledges the importance of academic, spiritual, and then athletic growth, as well as placing a great deal of attention on each and every student’s success. As Associate Head Softball Coach, Fee recognizes the opportunity that coaches are presented with and the responsibility they have to positively influence every student, just like he once experienced.

All Around Success

“I receive the most joy when seeing a student-athlete overcome obstacles either academically, personally or athletically after seeking your help. We are given an amazing opportunity to influence young men and women’s lives and whenever we get to see immediate results from doing so it gives all of us great satisfaction.” ~ Fee

At Geneva, the Athletic Program emphasizes all-around growth on and off the field to prepare students for life after graduation.

What is even more impressive and unique is the amount of experience that Geneva Athletics represents. When you take the experience of the head coaches from the program’s 18 sports, you will see that they are representing over two hundred years at Geneva! If that doesn’t spell loyalty and school pride, we don’t know what does!

Did You Know??

You might be surprised to find that Geneva’s Athletic Program is more famous than you thought. Below are some fun facts from geneva.edu:

  • The Geneva College Golden Tornadoes are members of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference of the NCAA Division III.
  • Geneva College is the birthplace of college basketball.
  • Cal Hubbard, a 1927 Geneva grad, is the only athlete to ever be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame, and the College Football Hall of Fame.
  • Football games are played at Geneva’s Reeves Field (7,500 capacity), where Joe Namath played his high school games.
  • Men’s sports: football, basketball, baseball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, cross country, soccer and volleyball.
  • Women’s sports: basketball, golf, volleyball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, cross country, soccer, and softball.

Beaver Falls may be a small town, but the dedication and heart that is felt at Geneva College is just another thing that makes us proud to be living in such a wonderful area.
