Home is Where Our Story Begins

It is no secret that living in a small town has so many advantages – a tight knit community, cheering on your nearby mom and pop shops, and an overall sense of comfort; it’s homeSigns by Sam was lucky to have the opportunity to work with a local business that continuously brings truth and importance to the phrase, “home is where the heart is.”

Owners, Chris and Alison Hutchins

Hutch & Home, LLC is a furniture store and interior design business, located on the main street of downtown Beaver Falls, PA.  Owned and operated by Chris and Alison Hutchins, this husband and wife duo knows that running a business in a small town is anything but a small deal.  Alison, a Riverside High School graduate, has experienced first-hand what it’s like to live in a supportive community, so opening a store in her hometown was truly something special. Hutch & Home, a three-level showroom, carries not only new furniture and home decor pieces (at prices often lower than Wayfair!), but the size and variety of their vintage and antique collections are something every collector dreams of.  In the off-chance you don’t find anything in this 10,000 sq. ft. space, customers can rest easy in knowing that special orders can be placed for items not currently held in the store. Buying for your home and making it yours is something special, and Hutch & Home strives to make each customer’s experience (from designing all the way to their standard “white glove delivery”) just that – something special.

New Ideas, Old Buildings

The passion for interior design work has been with Alison since high school. After graduating, she moved to Savannah, GA to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design; it was here that an internship with an independent interior designer inspired and solidified her desire of one day having a business to call her own.  Post graduation, Alison would go on to work for a home builder in South Carolina as an Architectural Drafter and eventually for La-Z-Boy and Havertys furniture stores.

Christmas of 2014 was one to remember for the Hutchins family and their search for the perfect storefront.  Chris, who enlisted in the Marine Corp and then Army, retired from the military in 2013 (with 24 years of active duty in Special Operations) and the two moved back to Beaver County. They found that the owners of what used to be Karen’s Furniture had just retired that Summer; this left the area without a specialty furniture store and the couple with a big opportunity. Having a “turn-key” store close to their home in North Sewickley Township, as well as seeing huge potential for revitalization of the main street, laying down roots for Hutch & Home in Beaver Falls seemed like a no-brainer. Pretty soon, Alison and Chris would transform the space just like they do today for their customers.

Hutch & Home’s Showroom

Officially joining the community on May 28, 2015, Hutch & Home is everything a small town business district hopes to exude – passion and purpose. When asked about what they love most so far about opening their own store, Alison explains,

Building relationships with our customers. We are so grateful for everyone who has come in to see us, and made it a point to shop locally, and shop small. With online shopping, and bigger and bigger chain stores everywhere, it really does mean a lot when you know the people who you are giving your hard-earned money to. We have worked hard to earn the business of our friends and neighbors, and we have really enjoyed being able to give back when we’re able in the form of supporting our local non-profits, youth sports teams, and other local businesses. One thing that Beaver County has is a great sense of community spirit!

A strong business starts with a strong team, and the couple has grown their team to six employees, hoping to add even more staff come Fall.

“Home is Not a Place…It’s a Feeling.”

Alison with Kyree Beachem, an Ellwood City resident that has undergone multiple organ transplants. After spending months in the hospital for treatment, she returned home to a donated bedroom set to make her homecoming even more special.

Hutch & Home works diligently to help residents all over the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas to obtain a level of comfort that they are excited to come back to after a long day and can be proud to call home. What is even more admirable is how hard they work in giving back to the community in more ways than just design, whether it is through Holiday Open Houses or a fundraiser for a special cause.  Just in August, they held a Summer Dinner Party at Felicity Farms in Brighton Township; partnering with local vendors Herban Touch, Biba, Farm to Fork, Beaver Bagel, Four Twelve Winery and Petrucci Brothers, they raised money for an employee battling metastatic thyroid cancer (read Corinne’s story here).

Like Family

Well rounded businesses often stem from well-rounded individuals; Chris and Alison are no exception.  When the duo has some downtime from the store and fundraising, they certainly enjoy the little things. Both love to travel,  Alison loves to cook, and Chris enjoys hunting. With four kids and a small business, life sure does get exciting and sometimes spare time is few and far between, but the couple enjoys every second of it that they can soak up with their family.

Hutch & Home, LLC isn’t just a furniture store in a small town.  They are about the bigger picture – turning an idea into reality, creating a space where you relax and enjoy those little moments with your kids or family & friends, and cultivating relationships that extend well beyond a warranty label. It’s about loving your neighbor, your town…your home…because that is where your story begins.
